TEHRAN: The Iranian government has hinted at the gradual restoration of internet services following nationwide protests that prompted an 11-day internet shutdown. Officials indicated that internet access may be reintroduced slowly, though no specific timeline or details were provided.
The internet in Iran has been largely inaccessible since 8 January, causing widespread disruption to daily life. International phone calls and text messaging have been partially restored, with outgoing international calls resuming on 13 January and text messaging on 17 January.
Local Networks to Lead Initial Restoration
According to Tasnim News Agency, Iranian authorities plan to first restore access to domestic services and messaging apps via Iran’s national intranet. This network supports local media, ride-hailing apps, delivery services, and banking platforms, allowing essential services to function even while global internet connections remain limited.
AFP reporters in Tehran confirmed that they regained limited internet access on Sunday morning, suggesting a possible easing of restrictions by the Khamenei administration.
Protests and Humanitarian Toll
The current unrest began in late December following a sharp drop in the national currency and quickly spread nationwide, accompanied by widespread violence. The Iranian government shut down internet services to prevent externally coordinated campaigns, a move supported by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Human rights organizations in the United States report that 3,766 people have died during the protests, with thousands more injured. Additionally, 24,348 demonstrators have reportedly been arrested. Iranian authorities have not released official figures, though Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei acknowledged that thousands lost their lives in the unrest.
The gradual restoration of internet services is expected to provide some relief to citizens who have faced disruptions to communication, banking, and essential services during the prolonged shutdown.
