Washington/Tehran: As protests in Iran enter their third week, the United States is closely monitoring the situation, with casualties in Tehran surpassing 500. White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt has stated that President Donald Trump “will not hesitate to use force if deemed necessary” in response to actions by the Iranian government against demonstrators. However, Trump continues to prioritize diplomatic channels as the first option and has revealed that Iran has sought talks with the US.
The world is now focused on what America’s next move in Iran will be.
Possible US Responses
According to The World Zone, the US is considering multiple options, including military strikes, cyber-attacks, and the imposition of new sanctions. Previously, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran.
No Major Military Movement Yet
Despite the escalating tension, no significant military movements—such as cargo flights, tankers, or strategic aircraft—have been publicly observed by Iran. Similarly, there are no indications of aircraft carriers being redeployed to the region. Nonetheless, the US military is capable of launching major operations without carrier support. US bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Jordan currently provide airpower in the region, and B-2 bombers stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri could reach Iran within hours if required.
Iran’s Vulnerability Amid Internal Unrest
While Iran possesses short-range ballistic and cruise missiles, ongoing internal unrest has weakened its ability to confront the US directly. The Iranian government is primarily focused on suppressing domestic protests, though Tehran has responded to US statements in a defiant tone.
Israel’s Role
Amid the US-Iran tensions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed support for the Iranian protesters. There is a possibility of coordinated US-Israeli action against Iran, similar to the operation conducted last June. Israeli forces remain on high alert and ready for immediate deployment, although decision-making largely centers on President Trump’s moves. Other regional powers are also closely watching Washington before taking any steps.
The Stakes Are High
Iran has warned of retaliatory action against Israel if provoked. Meanwhile, Israel has indicated that it may act preemptively if threats materialize. The situation remains volatile, with the world watching closely how the US balances diplomacy, sanctions, and the potential for military intervention in Tehran.
