Iran Erupts in Anti-Khamenei Protests; Trump Warns of Military Action

Tehran, January 10, 2026: Protests in Iran, which began two weeks ago over rising prices and currency depreciation, have escalated into a nationwide anti-regime movement. Since midnight Thursday, thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets, chanting slogans against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and demanding regime change.

Protesters have set fire to buildings and toppled statues, including reports of arson at government TV offices in Isfahan and at the Al-Rasoul Mosque in Tehran. British far-right activist Tommy Robinson claimed responsibility for highlighting some of these events on social media.

Trump Issues Stark Warning

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has issued an open warning to Iran, threatening military action if the government cracks down on protesters. Trump stated, “If they start killing people like before, we will intervene. We will strike where it hurts the most.” He added, “Iran is in big trouble. People are taking control of cities in ways no one imagined just weeks ago. It would be wise not to start the shooting, because we will respond.”

Khamenei Responds on Television

Amid the unrest, Supreme Leader Khamenei appeared on state television Friday, criticizing protesters for allegedly destroying their own streets to please foreign leaders. The state broadcast also showed pro-government rallies with participants chanting anti-American slogans.

Casualties and Internet Shutdown

The violent demonstrations have led to the deaths of at least 42 people since protests began on December 28. Human rights organizations have accused security forces of firing on demonstrators. In response to the unrest, Iran has imposed a nationwide internet blackout and restricted telephone communications, making contact with the outside world extremely difficult.
