Iran Declares Nuclear Weapons “Haram”; Supreme Leader’s Representative Emphasizes Peaceful Use

Tehran, January 24, 2026 – Iran has officially reaffirmed that it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons, calling such armaments “haram” (forbidden). Abdul Majid Hakim Elahi, the representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in India, made the statement in an interview with ANI, underscoring Iran’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy for humanitarian and societal purposes.

Nuclear Weapons Are Forbidden

Elahi stated that Iran has never sought nuclear weapons, citing a religious decree (fatwa) by Supreme Leader Khamenei that prohibits their production. “Iran wants nuclear power strictly for peaceful and social development purposes,” he said. He emphasized that Iran’s nuclear facilities are subject to intense international scrutiny, contrasting this with other countries that operate nuclear programs with little oversight.

Accusation of Double Standards

Elahi also criticized what he described as “double standards” in the global approach to nuclear proliferation. He noted that while Iran faces strict monitoring and sanctions, other nations possess nuclear capabilities without facing similar international pressure. Last year, the United States and Israel accused Iran of attempting to develop nuclear weapons and even launched attacks on Iranian nuclear sites, which Tehran rejects.

Historic India-Iran Relations

During the interview, Elahi highlighted the long-standing cultural and economic ties between India and Iran, describing them as predating the rise of Islam by hundreds of years. “The Supreme Leader consistently emphasizes strong cooperation and good relations with India,” he said, adding that Iran looks forward to India’s active participation in the Chabahar project. Elahi referenced historical connections, noting that even ancient Indian philosophical texts were studied in Iran over three millennia ago.

The statement reflects Tehran’s ongoing effort to reassure the international community about the peaceful intent of its nuclear program while asserting its right to nuclear energy for development and humanitarian purposes.
