India’s Defence Budget Rises by 15%, Pakistani Expert Alarmed at Army’s Preparedness

Islamabad: India’s Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the 2026-27 budget on Sunday, highlighting a significant boost in defence spending. The Indian defence budget has been raised to ₹7.84 lakh crore, marking a 15.3% increase compared to the previous year. The budget emphasizes “Make in India” initiatives and self-reliance in defence production.

The move has caught the attention of Pakistani defence analysts. Pakistani commentator Kamar Cheema noted that India’s heightened focus on defence is unprecedented and reflects the country’s drive to rapidly strengthen its military capabilities—posing potential challenges for Pakistan.

In a recent video, Cheema said, “This year, India’s defence budget has increased by 15%. The government is prioritizing national security and the armed forces. Additionally, India has decided to procure Su-57 fighter jets from Russia. Such developments will certainly increase the security challenges for Pakistan.”

Cheema added that India is likely to invest heavily in jets and air defence systems, including additional S-400 air defence systems from Russia. Despite pressure from the U.S., India continues to rely on Russia as a key defence partner. He further noted that India is also expanding its procurement from France, Russia, Australia, and other countries, signaling a serious commitment to strengthening its military capabilities.

The expert suggested that India’s increased defence spending is partly influenced by last year’s military confrontations with Pakistan. These events highlighted to India that it faces not just regional rivals like Pakistan, but also the larger strategic presence of China—although a direct conflict with China seems unlikely. Cheema also discussed India’s recent strategic moves in the region, including withholding budget allocations for Iran’s Chabahar Port, suspending funding to Bangladesh, and prioritizing Afghanistan, reflecting New Delhi’s efforts to build new regional partnerships.
