
Ottawa/Toronto: In a tragic incident, 20-year-old Indian doctoral student Shivank Avasthi was shot dead near the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto. The shooting took place in broad daylight at Highland Creek Trail on Old Kingston Road, leaving students and the local community in shock.
The Indian High Commission in Canada expressed deep grief over the incident, stating that it is in contact with the victim’s family and is coordinating with local authorities to provide all necessary assistance. “We are profoundly saddened by the tragic death of young Indian doctoral student Shivank Avasthi in the shooting near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus,” the High Commission posted on social media.
Police Investigation Underway
Toronto police confirmed that the shooting occurred on Tuesday. Officers rushed to the scene, but Avasthi had succumbed to his injuries before help could arrive. The perpetrators fled the area prior to police arrival, and despite a search operation, no arrests have been made so far.
The incident has sparked fear and anger among students at the Scarborough campus. According to social media posts, Avasthi was a third-year Life Sciences student, and the shooting inside campus premises has raised serious concerns about student safety.
Remembering Shivank
Shivank Avasthi was also an active member of the University of Toronto Scarborough cheerleading team. The team expressed profound grief over his sudden demise, stating, “We are heartbroken and in shock over the loss of our dear Shivank Avasthi. He always encouraged and motivated everyone during practice, and his absence will be deeply felt.”
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the shooting, while students and faculty call for heightened security measures on and around the campus.
