India Strengthens Missile Arsenal: “Suryastra” Rocket System to Counter Pakistan’s Fateh-2 and China’s Long-Range Threats

Tel Aviv / New Delhi, January 5, 2026: In response to Pakistan’s Fateh-2 missile tests and China’s growing long-range rocket capabilities, India has signed a mega defense deal with Israel to acquire an advanced rocket system capable of precision strikes across 150–300 km ranges.

The move comes after the Fateh-2 missile, fired by Pakistan during Operation Sindur targeting Delhi, was successfully intercepted by India’s Barak-8 air defense system over Sirsa, Haryana. While India’s BrahMos missiles remain its primary strike capability, their high cost makes frequent deployment impractical. A need arose for a cost-effective, precise, long-range rocket system to counter both Pakistan and China.

The “Suryastra” Rocket System

Developed by Israel’s Elbit Systems in collaboration with Pune-based NIBE, the newly procured system has been named “Suryastra”. Also referred to as a Universal Rocket Launcher, it is a multi-caliber platform capable of firing rockets of 122 mm, 160 mm, and 306 mm. The system supports Area Fire and Deep Precision Strike, enabling highly accurate attacks on long-distance targets. The contract, valued at approximately ₹293 crore, was signed under India’s Emergency Procurement Power, bypassing conventional defense approvals to meet urgent operational needs.

The system also integrates Predator Hawk-class tactical missiles with ranges of 150–300 km. The deal includes ground equipment, electronic sequencing units (ESP), accessories, and ammunition, ensuring immediate operational readiness.

Strategic Implications

With the acquisition of Suryastra, India ensures parity with Pakistan’s Fateh-2 capabilities and China’s long-range guided rockets, reducing dependence on the Air Force for tactical strikes. Two types of rockets will be deployed: eight 306 mm guided rockets per vehicle with ~150 km range, and four heavy rockets per launcher with ~300 km range, providing a balanced and flexible offensive posture.

Domestic Developments

India is simultaneously developing indigenous long-range rocket systems. Recent successful tests of the Pralay missile, with a 120 km range, demonstrated high precision and reliable guidance. Work is also ongoing on 300 km range domestic rockets, which are expected to form the backbone of India’s long-range rocket artillery in the coming years.

Defense analysts note that the combination of Suryastra and domestic systems will significantly enhance India’s deterrence capabilities, enabling precise counterstrikes while maintaining strategic balance with both Pakistan and China.
