India May Soon Get Israel’s Iron Dome Shield Ahead of PM Modi’s Visit

Tel Aviv/New Delhi: Israel has offered India the technology behind its highly successful Iron Dome air defense system, raising the prospect of a major defense upgrade during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Israel. The two countries are expected to finalize multi-billion-dollar defense deals covering missiles, AI technology, drones, and air defense systems.

Iron Dome: Proven Shield Against Rockets and Missiles

The Iron Dome has been a critical defense asset for Israel in conflicts against Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, and Houthi forces in Yemen. The system intercepts rockets, missiles, and drones with a claimed 90% success rate. It uses radar to detect incoming threats and deploys Tamir interceptor missiles only against targets threatening populated areas. The system has successfully neutralized thousands of attacks, protecting civilian populations.

Strengthening Indo-Israel Defense Ties

Israel’s Ambassador to India, Yaniv Revach, stated that the countries plan to expand their bilateral defense cooperation, including technology transfers and local manufacturing in India. “We are excited about PM Modi’s visit. This trip will cover key political, economic, and defense initiatives, with a focus on enhancing our defense partnership,” Revach said.

The ambassador also highlighted a broader regional strategy, noting that Israel seeks to build alliances with India, Abraham Accord countries, select African nations, and Middle Eastern partners like Cyprus and Greece to counter radical threats in the region.

The Iron Dome’s Cost and Considerations

Each Iron Dome battery includes a radar, battle management control center, and a launcher equipped with at least 20 Tamir interceptors, costing approximately $10 million per battery. Each interceptor missile is priced between $40,000 and $50,000. While highly effective, the system comes with significant costs, prompting India to consider alternative technologies, such as Iron Beam, a laser-based air defense solution.

A Strategic Upgrade for India

With growing threats from China and Pakistan, acquiring the Iron Dome could provide India with a formidable shield against short-range missiles and drones. During PM Modi’s visit, both countries are expected to explore ways to share cutting-edge defense technologies and further deepen their strategic partnership.
