LONDON: India has made a significant jump in the 2026 global passport rankings, moving up five places to reach the 80th position. According to the latest Henley Passport Index, Indian passport holders now enjoy visa-free access to 55 countries, highlighting the growing strength and international reach of India’s travel and diplomatic networks.
Last year, India was ranked 85th, making this upward shift a notable improvement. While the rise reflects progress in New Delhi’s diplomatic engagements, Indian passport holders still face visa restrictions in much of the world.
Top Ranked Passports
Singapore retains its top position, with its citizens enjoying visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 192 out of 227 countries and territories. Japan and South Korea share the second spot, offering access to 188 destinations. Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland rank third with visa-free entry to 186 countries, followed by Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Norway at fourth place (185 destinations). Hungary, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the UAE occupy fifth place with access to 184 countries.
India’s Neighbors Lag Behind
In the latest rankings, India’s neighbor Pakistan occupies the 98th position, sharing the spot with Yemen. Bangladesh ranks 95th.
The Henley Passport Index, published by London-based Henley & Partners, ranks passports based on the number of countries their holders can enter without a visa. India’s climb this year underscores its expanding global connectivity and growing influence in international travel facilitation.
