India-EU Trade Deal Pressures Trump to Strike with Delhi, Canadian Expert Reveals

Washington/New Delhi: US President Donald Trump, who had maintained a tough stance on India for some time, suddenly announced a major trade deal with India on Monday. Under the agreement, US tariffs on Indian goods have been reduced from 50% to 18%, and Trump also publicly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Experts point to India’s recently signed trade deal with the European Union as a key factor behind Washington’s sudden shift.

Canada-Based Expert Weighs In
Trade analyst Jacques Shore noted in an interview that the India-EU deal likely created a sense of urgency within the Trump administration. He explained:
“After India signed the deal with the EU, the United States may have felt the risk of being left behind. This likely compelled Washington to engage quickly with India on trade matters.”

Shore emphasized the scale of the India-EU agreement, noting that it opens a market of roughly 2 billion people—including 1.5 billion in India and 500 million in Europe—making it impossible for the US to ignore.

Global Experts Agree
Analysts worldwide see the India-EU free trade agreement as the final push that pressured the US. While India gained a strategic economic advantage, Washington faced the risk of falling behind in global trade competitiveness. Avoiding confrontation with both Europe and India, the US expedited negotiations, culminating in the tariff reduction and trade deal announcement.

The India-EU Deal: The ‘Mother of All Deals’
The India-EU trade agreement was officially signed last week, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing the deal. Widely referred to as the “Mother of All Deals,” experts suggest it signals the rise of a multipolar trade world where the US can no longer act unilaterally. The growing closeness between Europe, India, and other countries such as Canada has pushed the US to respond swiftly to maintain influence.
