India-EU Mobility Pact to Open Doors for Millions of Indians, Experts Predict Major Benefits

Brussels/New Delhi: India and the European Union (EU) have signed a landmark mobility pact aimed at facilitating easier movement for Indian students, professionals, and workers across the 27 EU member states. The agreement was formalized during the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio da Costa.

The pact comes at a time when U.S. policies on H1-B visas have made migration and work opportunities for Indian citizens more challenging. Experts say this mobility framework could transform the dreams of millions of Indian students and professionals looking to study, work, or settle abroad.

Under the new framework, Indian students will have unrestricted mobility across EU countries, making it easier to travel, study, and work in the region. Currently, around 120,000 Indian students are studying in the EU, with Germany hosting the largest group of 50,000, making Indians the biggest international student community there. Prime Minister Modi highlighted that over 800,000 Indians are actively contributing across EU nations in various sectors.

Experts See Opportunities Across Sectors
Strategic advisor Ritesh Jain said, “The EU has opened doors for free movement of Indian workers across Europe. Universities across Europe will now be more accessible for Indian students, with tuition costs far lower than in the U.S. or the U.K., making this a remarkable opportunity.”

The pact is expected to particularly benefit engineers, care workers, hospitality staff, and drivers. It also paves the way for Indian researchers and professionals to gain international exposure while addressing Europe’s declining workforce challenges.

Boost to NRI Remittances
Jain added, “With the aging population in the Western world, skilled young Indians will increasingly receive ‘red carpet treatment.’ Greater employment opportunities abroad for Indians will likely lead to a significant rise in remittances to India over the next few years.”

He also noted challenges faced by Indian students in Canada, where changes in the screening process and fraudulent practices had previously made it difficult for students to pursue education abroad. The India-EU mobility pact promises a more transparent and structured pathway for Indians looking to explore opportunities in Europe.

The agreement signals a significant step forward in India-EU relations, offering new avenues for Indian talent while strengthening strategic and economic ties between the two regions.
