Dhaka: A horrifying incident has shaken Bangladesh as a Hindu youth was brutally beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh district over allegations of blasphemy. The killing comes amid widespread unrest following the death of Sharif Usman Hadi, a prominent student leader opposing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to BBC Bangla, the victim, identified as Dipu Chandra Das, was a young garment factory worker. Local reports suggest that he was accused of making disrespectful remarks about Prophet Muhammad.
Authorities stated that the attack occurred around 9 PM, when the mob assaulted Das and fatally beat him. Shockingly, the violence did not stop after his death. Extremists tied his body to a tree and set it on fire before police arrived to regain control of the scene. The body has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination.
No formal case has yet been registered. Police said they are trying to locate the victim’s family, and legal proceedings will begin once an official complaint is filed.
This mob lynching took place against the backdrop of violent demonstrations that erupted across Bangladesh following the assassination of Sharif Usman Hadi. Hadi, a spokesperson for the anti-India and extremist organization Inquilab Platform, was shot by motorbike-riding assailants in Dhaka on 12 December and later flown to Singapore for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.
The incident highlights growing concerns over law and order in Bangladesh, the vulnerability of minority communities, and the escalating violence linked to political and religious tensions in the country.
