Islamabad: Hafiz Saeed, the globally designated terrorist and leader of the banned group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), is reportedly moving freely in Pakistan despite official claims that he is in custody. Saeed and his organization are responsible for multiple terrorist attacks in India, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
A video emerging from Pakistan’s Punjab province, reportedly from Okara district, shows Saeed attending meetings and interacting with his commanders in a relaxed manner, casting doubt on Islamabad’s repeated claims of controlling him under house arrest or in jail.
Video Evidence of Freedom
The video, shared by OSINT TV, shows Saeed active in October and November last year. He is seen meeting Lashkar’s deputy Saifullah Qasuri and recruitment commander Nasr Javed. Police personnel in uniform are visible nearby, allegedly providing him security. In the footage, Saeed is casually speaking with his associates, indicating operational freedom despite international sanctions.
Official Position vs Ground Reality
Pakistan has maintained that Saeed has been imprisoned since 2019 and has been sentenced to over 50 years in multiple terrorism-related cases. The government and the United Nations consider him jailed at Kot Lakhpat Central Jail in Lahore. However, repeated videos now suggest he is not confined and continues to manage both terrorist activities and his political party.
Saeed founded a political party and contested Pakistan’s 2018 general elections. His party remains active, with family members participating in local political activities.
India’s Most Wanted
Hafiz Saeed is listed among India’s most wanted terrorists. He is accused of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai attacks, the Pulwama attack, and other terrorist operations on Indian soil. India has repeatedly requested his extradition from Pakistan, but Islamabad has consistently refused.
The videos of Saeed moving freely raise serious questions about Pakistan’s claims of curbing terrorism and enforcing international obligations, highlighting ongoing concerns about the country’s handling of designated terrorists.
