Washington: The U.S. Embassy in India has issued a stern warning that has unsettled thousands of Indian professionals stuck in India due to H-1B and H-4 visa delays. Since December 15, the U.S. State Department has begun screening H-1B visa applicants’ social media profiles, leading to a sudden reduction in daily visa interviews. Consequently, thousands of appointments were canceled, with some rescheduled six months or more into the future. Notifications were sent abruptly via email, adding to the stress of those awaiting visa renewals.
U.S. Embassy Issues Warning
The Embassy posted on the social media platform X: “Violating U.S. law will result in severe criminal penalties. The Trump administration is committed to ending illegal immigration and protecting our country’s borders and citizens.” A previous warning on December 26 targeted individuals and companies accused of exploiting vulnerable people by promoting illegal immigration.
Frustration Among Professionals
The Embassy’s latest warning intensified frustration among social media users. Many expressed anger at what they see as administrative hurdles imposed under the guise of legal enforcement. One user commented: “Canceling appointments at the last minute and pushing them four months ahead is cruel. You are targeting India to appease your MAGA base and maximize economic gain. We see your game.” Another asked, “Who are you warning? Are you a diplomatic mission or a thug?”
The delays come at a time when many Indian professionals, employed in the U.S., traveled home for visa renewals, only to find themselves stranded due to sudden cancellations and extended rescheduling.
