Greenland Crisis Reaches Tipping Point: Danish PM Issues Strong Statement Amid Trump Threats

Copenhagen: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that her country is at a decisive juncture regarding the future of Greenland. Her statement comes amid renewed threats by former U.S. President Donald Trump to seize control of the Arctic island, whose defense and foreign policy fall under Danish authority. The escalating tensions have strained relations between the two NATO members.

According to Al Jazeera, Frederiksen addressed other Danish officials on Monday, saying, “The conflict over Greenland is ongoing. This is a decisive moment. The stakes go far beyond Greenland’s future. Denmark is ready to defend its values everywhere, including the Arctic. We believe in international law and the right of people to self-determination.”

Tensions Over Greenland Escalate
Trump has repeatedly argued that U.S. control over Greenland is necessary to counter Russian and Chinese military activities in the Arctic. His administration has not ruled out military intervention, raising concerns not only in Greenland and Denmark but across Europe. Sweden and Germany have openly expressed support for Denmark in the dispute.

Frederiksen also warned that any attempt by the U.S. to seize Greenland would threaten the very existence of NATO. “Military action by the United States against a NATO member would effectively destroy the alliance,” she said.

Historical Context
Greenland, with a population of approximately 57,000, remained a Danish colony until 1953. While it later gained self-governance, Denmark retains authority over defense and foreign policy. While some voices in Greenland call for limiting ties with Denmark, there is widespread opposition to U.S. acquisition. The Greenlandic government has consistently emphasized that only its people should decide the island’s future.

European leaders, including those from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom, have stated clearly that no military action should occur in Greenland. Despite these warnings, the U.S. and Donald Trump continue to show little indication of changing course.
