COPENHAGEN: Tensions between Denmark and the United States over Greenland have intensified, as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a firm warning to President Donald Trump, rejecting US threats of tariffs against European countries.
Denmark Stands Firm
Prime Minister Frederiksen condemned Trump’s move to impose tariffs on Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, saying Europe would not be “blackmailed.” She emphasized that the future of Greenland is a matter for its residents, whose rights will be fully respected.
Frederiksen wrote on social media, “We want to cooperate; we do not seek conflict. I am encouraged by the messages of solidarity we are receiving from across the continent, and I can say that Europe will not be blackmailed. It is even more important that we stand firmly for the core values that have built the European community.”
European Leaders Sound Alarm
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen warned that Trump’s actions could threaten the world order and the future of NATO. Following a meeting of EU ambassadors in Brussels on Sunday, the European Council announced plans to convene an EU summit in the coming days to address the crisis.
European leaders collectively condemned the US threat to impose tariffs, stating that such actions endanger transatlantic relations. The statement was supported by the UK, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.
Strategic Importance of Greenland
Greenland, home to around 57,000 people, has been self-governing since 1979, though Denmark controls its defense and foreign policy. President Trump has asserted that US control of Greenland is crucial for national security, while Denmark has warned that any attempt to seize the island could undermine NATO unity.
The standoff highlights the growing friction between the US and Europe over strategic Arctic interests and the rules governing transatlantic cooperation.
