France to Deploy Troops to Greenland; Macron Sends Strong Message to Trump

Paris/Davos: Tensions between the United States and Europe over Greenland continue to escalate, as French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will contribute troops for NATO exercises in Greenland. Macron’s declaration comes as U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he may push European NATO allies to support American ambitions in the Arctic territory.

Macron’s move signals Europe’s refusal to bow to threats. Speaking at Davos, the French president made it clear that Europe will not be intimidated by any form of coercion, a pointed message aimed at Trump. The U.S. president had earlier warned that European nations could face steep tariffs if they resisted U.S. plans for Greenland. NATO officials have also cautioned that Trump’s Arctic strategy risks destabilizing the entire alliance.

EU Urged to Resist U.S. Pressure

Macron called on the European Union to utilize its trade dispute mechanisms to counteract Trump’s tariff threats. “Pressure-countering mechanisms are a powerful tool, and we must not hesitate to use them in today’s challenging environment,” Macron said, denouncing the aggressive accumulation of new tariffs.

Trump Adopts a Moderated Tone

Meanwhile, Trump softened his rhetoric on Greenland compared to his earlier statements. In a press briefing, he suggested that a mutually acceptable solution could be reached: “I think we’ll find a solution that makes NATO happy and makes us happy,” he said. However, he reiterated that U.S. national security interests make control over Greenland strategically important.

Emergency EU Meeting Called

President Macron has convened an emergency meeting of European leaders in Paris later this week to discuss Trump’s efforts to acquire Greenland and the rising tensions over U.S. tariffs. Trump will not attend, citing Macron’s extended leadership role in France as a factor. Earlier this week, Trump also shared private communications between himself, Macron, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on social media, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic friction.
