The French Navy has intercepted a Russian oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea, raising tensions over alleged sanctions violations. The vessel is believed to be part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” reportedly designed to circumvent international restrictions.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the tanker, en route from Russia, was operating under international sanctions. Speaking on the matter, he stated, “We will not tolerate any violations. This morning, the French Navy seized a Russian oil tanker suspected of flying a false flag. The operation was conducted in the Mediterranean with the support of several allies, fully in compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.”
Judicial Investigation Underway
French authorities have launched a judicial inquiry and redirected the tanker to port for further investigation. President Macron emphasized France’s commitment to upholding international law and enforcing sanctions effectively. He warned that activities of the “shadow fleet” contribute to financing Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine.
Tanker ‘Grinch’ Accused of False Flag Operations
The seized vessel, named Grinch, was intercepted between Spain and Morocco. The action comes amid over a dozen EU sanctions imposed on Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to a November report by the Helsinki-based Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, more than 100 Russian ships used false flags in the first nine months of 2025, transporting roughly 11 million tons of oil valued at €4.7 billion ($5.5 billion).
Ukraine Praises France
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Macron for the operation, stating on social media that it reflects the determination needed to ensure Russian oil does not fund the war. He called for Russian tankers operating near European coasts to be stopped.
Russian Embassy Responds
The Russian Embassy in France said it was not informed of the seizure. In a statement reported by TASS, the embassy confirmed that officials are working to ascertain whether any Russian nationals are among the crew to provide necessary assistance.
