France Issues Stern Warning to Trump Over Greenland: NATO Troops Deployed Amid Rising Tensions

France has strongly objected to U.S. plans regarding Greenland, warning the Trump administration that any military action could trigger major geopolitical consequences. In a show of solidarity, France has aligned with Greenland and Denmark, emphasizing that interference in the region is unacceptable.

The dispute arises after U.S. officials suggested possible military involvement in Greenland, sparking immediate backlash from France. French authorities have cautioned Washington that such steps would cross a red line, potentially reshaping international relations and creating “a completely new world order,” according to French officials.

In an interview with the Financial Times, French Finance Minister Roland Lescure stated that he had discussed the issue with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, making it clear that France opposes any attempt to seize Greenland. Lescure emphasized that such a move would endanger economic relations between the United States and the European Union.

“Greenland is part of a sovereign nation within the EU framework,” Lescure said. “Any interference is unacceptable. A U.S. attack on Greenland would fundamentally alter the global order. The Trump administration’s stance highlights a contradiction—at times acting as an ally, and at others, behaving unpredictably as an adversary.”

French President Emmanuel Macron has also taken a firm stance, asserting that France and European nations will not compromise on security or respect for regional sovereignty. In response to rising tensions, France, together with NATO allies including Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Norway, has deployed troops and military assets to Greenland.

Tensions with the U.S. remain high. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed that recent discussions in Washington did not yield any resolution. She noted that, despite Denmark’s firm opposition, the U.S. continues to pursue ambitions of gaining control over Greenland. A dedicated working group has now been formed to address the issue, but fundamental disagreements remain, making the situation increasingly serious.

The standoff underscores growing friction between the U.S. and European allies over Arctic geopolitics and raises questions about the limits of military ambitions in sovereign territories.
