Nuuk/Copenhagen: European leaders are increasingly pushing back against US President Donald Trump’s threats over Greenland, raising tensions over his recent aggressive foreign policy moves. In response, Trump announced 10% tariffs on imports from eight European nations, prompting sharp criticism from Paris, Copenhagen, and other capitals.
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, warned against the rise of unilateral power politics. “Conflict has become normalized,” he said. “We are heading toward a world without rules, where international law is trampled and the only rule that matters is that of the most powerful.” Macron criticized Trump’s actions as aimed at weakening Europe and asserting control over the continent.
A close Macron aide confirmed that France has no plans to join a “Board of Peace” initiative with multiple nations if it undermines the UN’s principles and framework. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also condemned Trump’s demands, saying, “International law is not a game. America’s attempts to seize control over this vast Arctic region threaten the global order. If ignored, alliances will fracture, and the consequences will be severe.”
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen echoed the concerns, warning in parliament that “the worst may be yet to come” and emphasizing that Europe has always sought cooperation, not confrontation. During a European Parliament debate, Danish MEP Anders Vistisen bluntly dismissed Trump’s Greenland claims, saying, “I’ll put this in words you may understand, Mr. President: Go to hell.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also opposed Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on imports from countries supporting Denmark and Greenland, including Norway and the UK. Starmer called it “wrong to force the UK to choose between America and Europe” and warned that a trade war would benefit no one.
As European nations unite to counter Trump’s threats, the standoff over Greenland is becoming a high-stakes test of international cooperation versus unilateral power.
