Islamabad: Fazlur Rehman, leader of Pakistan’s religious-political party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F), launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government and the country’s military establishment, warning that Pakistan has lost all its friends on the global stage—including its long-standing ally China.
Foreign Policy Failures Over Decades
Speaking at a public event, Rehman—popularly known as Maulana Diesel—criticized Pakistan’s foreign policy over the past 78 years, particularly its approach toward Afghanistan. He questioned why Pakistan’s Afghanistan policy has repeatedly failed, noting, “Today, India is our enemy, Afghanistan is our enemy, and even Iran and China are upset with us.”
Contradictions in Border Security
Rehman highlighted inconsistencies in Pakistan’s stance on cross-border security and trade. He mocked the government’s claim that Afghanistan shelters militants, saying, “It is strange that not even a single pomegranate can come from Afghanistan, yet terrorists manage to enter Pakistan.”
Divisions Within the Military
Rehman also accused Pakistan’s military leadership of indecision. He said, “One general speaks of dialogue and peace, while another pushes for war. How can a country formulate a coherent foreign policy amid such confusion?”
CPEC and China Relations in Crisis
Targeting the Shehbaz Sharif administration, Rehman criticized the lack of progress on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), claiming that China has lost faith in Pakistan. “During Sharif’s tenure, CPEC has stagnated because Pakistan has failed to regain China’s trust. Today, China is unhappy with us,” he said.
Rehman’s remarks underscore Pakistan’s deepening foreign policy crisis, highlighting internal divisions and strained international relations that challenge the country’s strategic standing.
