Doomsday Clock Moves Closer to Midnight: Humanity Just 85 Seconds Away from Potential Catastrophe

Washington: Scientists have advanced the Doomsday Clock by four seconds, bringing it closer to midnight than ever before in its 80-year history. Now set at 85 seconds to midnight, the symbolic clock warns that humanity faces unprecedented risks, signaling the growing threat of global catastrophe. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced the update on Tuesday.

The decision reflects heightened global tensions, escalating conflicts, and accelerating technological dangers. Experts cited the increasing threat of nuclear warfare and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence as major factors pushing humanity perilously close to disaster.

Urgent Call for Global Action

Alexandra Bell, Chair of the Bulletin, said, “The message of the Doomsday Clock could not be clearer. The risk of catastrophe is rising, cooperation is declining, and our time is running out.” She stressed that while change is both necessary and possible, the global community must demand immediate action from world leaders to address these existential threats.

Daniel Holz, Chair of the Science and Security Board, warned that a divided world makes humanity even more vulnerable. Rising aggression and opposition among global powers have jeopardized hard-won international agreements, further increasing the risk of disaster. “If conditions do not improve, the probability of catastrophe will continue to rise,” he said.

What is the Doomsday Clock?

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic indicator of how close humanity is to destroying itself through man-made disasters. Midnight represents total global catastrophe, when Earth becomes uninhabitable. Last year, the clock was set at 89 seconds to midnight; Tuesday’s adjustment brings it four seconds closer. The furthest point was in 1991, after the end of the Cold War.Washington: Scientists have advanced the Doomsday Clock by four seconds, bringing it closer to midnight than ever before in its 80-year history.
