Oslo: Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has responded to US President Donald Trump regarding the Nobel Peace Prize, making it clear that Trump’s criticism of his government is entirely unfounded.
Trump reportedly messaged Støre expressing his disappointment over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize and linking it to his efforts to acquire Greenland. In response, the Norwegian Prime Minister clarified that the Norwegian government plays no role in selecting Nobel laureates, as the Nobel Committee operates independently.
“I have clearly told President Trump that the award is given by an independent Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government,” Støre said. “President Trump sent me a message implying that Norway’s failure to grant him the Nobel Peace Prize justified his move toward Greenland. I made it clear to him that the Norwegian government has no involvement in deciding the laureates.”
Støre further explained that he and Finnish President Alexander Stubb had contacted Trump to discuss America’s proposed tariffs on European goods related to the Greenland issue. However, Trump’s response shifted the conversation in an unexpected direction.
Trump allegedly said that, considering Norway’s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize despite preventing more than eight wars, he no longer felt the need to focus on peace and would instead prioritize what he deemed best for the United States.
Regarding Greenland, the Norwegian Prime Minister emphasized that Norway supports Denmark’s sovereignty over the territory and that NATO’s Arctic security initiatives should be strengthened.
Trump has long hinted at acquiring Greenland, a controversy that escalated after he announced on Saturday that starting February 1, the US would impose a 10% tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland, citing a lack of support on Greenland.
