Washington: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed outrage over the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down his global tariffs, calling the ruling “insulting.” Trump has criticized the Court for overstepping its authority and indicated that he has a backup plan to bypass the decision.
Trump had imposed the tariffs last year on several countries, framing them as necessary for the U.S. economy. The Supreme Court, in a historic 6-3 ruling, declared the tariffs illegal, noting that Trump misused powers granted under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The Court emphasized that the authority to impose such tariffs lies with Congress, not the President.
No Official White House Response
At the time of the Supreme Court ruling, Trump was reportedly attending a working breakfast at the White House with U.S. governors. Sources suggest the decision disrupted the meeting, and Trump reacted angrily, reportedly using strong language and calling the ruling “disgraceful.”
Supreme Court Highlights Trump’s Misuse of Power
The Court ruled that Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose heavy tariffs on foreign products was unlawful. Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the majority made clear that the President cannot bypass Congress to levy tariffs, reinforcing the constitutional limits on executive authority.
Despite Trump’s warnings that overturning the tariffs could harm the U.S. economy, the Supreme Court dismissed these concerns, underscoring that tariff imposition falls exclusively within the legislative domain. This landmark decision significantly curtails presidential powers in matters of trade and international economic policy.
