Recent weeks have seen growing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on several issues, particularly regarding influence in Yemen and Sudan. Experts warn that these disagreements could have wider regional implications.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with the UAE, describing the relationship as essential for regional stability. “From our perspective, relations with the UAE are extremely important. They are a key element of regional stability. Saudi Arabia has always been keen to maintain positive and constructive relations with the UAE as an important partner within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC),” Prince Faisal said during remarks in Warsaw, reported by Al Arabiya News.
Acknowledging Differences on Yemen
Addressing the ongoing differences over Yemen, Prince Faisal acknowledged, “It is true that our views on Yemen differ. The UAE has now decided to withdraw from Yemen. If this is indeed the case, and the UAE fully steps back, Saudi Arabia will take on the responsibility there. This process will include building a framework to ensure our relations with the UAE remain strong. Both countries will continue to work together, not only for mutual benefit but for the broader interests of the region.”
Recent Tensions and Rivalry
Longtime allies, Saudi Arabia and the UAE experienced visible tensions last year, particularly over support to different factions in Yemen. Following clashes involving UAE-backed groups, Saudi forces conducted operations against them, leading to the withdrawal of UAE troops from the country. Subsequently, both nations appeared to be supporting opposing factions in Yemen.
The rivalry stems from a broader competition for influence and control of resources in the region. While both countries have historically operated in close strategic coordination for over a decade, recent months have seen their relationship strain, moving from subtle competition to open confrontation.
Experts stress that the dynamic between these two Gulf powers is critical, not just for the Middle East, but for global strategic interests. Maintaining dialogue and cooperation between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi will be crucial to ensure regional stability.
