Washington/Copenhagen, January 10, 2026: Tensions have escalated between the United States and Denmark following President Donald Trump’s repeated comments about acquiring Greenland. The autonomous Danish territory in the Arctic has been described by Trump as vital to US national security, with the White House suggesting that military options cannot be ruled out to secure it.
Reacting to the remarks, Denmark has pledged to defend Greenland against any potential US attack. Rasmus Jarlov, Chairperson of Denmark’s Defence Committee, stated, “If America attacks Greenland, Denmark must defend itself. While it would be difficult for our armed forces to stop the US, we will respond. A military strike would create an unprecedented situation between two NATO allies—completely catastrophic and utterly foolish.”
Despite the tension, Jarlov clarified that there is no current threat or hostility from the US toward Greenland. He highlighted that American forces already have access to Greenland under an existing defense agreement, which allows for mining operations, and emphasized, “There is absolutely no need for an attack, and we hope this matter can be set back on the right track.”
Why Trump Wants Greenland
Greenland, home to around 57,000 people, is rich in minerals and strategically located in the Arctic. Trump has repeatedly highlighted its importance to US national security and even proposed purchasing the territory, an idea firmly rejected by both Denmark and Greenland. Following recent US operations near Venezuela, Trump’s administration has intensified its rhetoric regarding Greenland, with discussions of military options entering public discourse.
Denmark’s Firm Stance
Jarlov stressed, “Greenland is not for sale. We cannot sell 57,000 Danish citizens to become Americans.” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a US attack on Greenland could threaten NATO itself. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt indicated that multiple options, including military action, are being considered to secure Greenland.
