Denmark Stands Firm Against Trump’s Threats, Deploys Troops to Greenland

Nuuk, Greenland: Danish authorities have strengthened their military presence in Greenland as US President Donald Trump continues to push for American control over the Arctic territory. The move comes amid rising tensions between Europe and the United States, with Trump’s statements on Greenland prompting protests and diplomatic friction.

On Monday, the Chief of the Royal Danish Army, General Peter Boysen, arrived in Greenland with an additional contingent of troops, landing at the western town of Kangerlussuaq. Danish broadcaster TV2 reported that the new deployment follows recent increases in military presence across the Arctic island.

Long-Term Military Commitment

Major General Søren Andersen, Denmark’s top Arctic commander, confirmed that approximately 100 Danish troops had already reached Nuuk, the capital, and an equal number were stationed in Kangerlussuaq. The newly arrived unit will participate in Arctic endurance training exercises.

Andersen emphasized that these troops are part of a long-term mission, likely to remain in Greenland for one to two years. “We are planning deployments for 2026 and beyond. This is a long-term military commitment, not a temporary measure,” he said.

NATO’s Role

In addition to troop deployments, Denmark has requested NATO involvement in Greenland. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels to propose the mission. Danish authorities have repeatedly warned that any US military action on Greenland could have implications for NATO.

Rising Tensions with the US

Trump’s insistence on acquiring Greenland has drawn sharp criticism from Denmark, Greenlandic authorities, and European leaders. Greenland, with a population of around 57,000, remains under Denmark’s defense and foreign policy jurisdiction. Danish officials have urged the United States to exercise restraint, while Trump has maintained a firm stance on his ambitions, raising tensions further.
