Chinese VT-4 Tank Falters in Cambodia-Thailand Conflict, Raising Concerns for Pakistan

The Chinese VT-4 main battle tank has come under scrutiny after Thai forces reported significant performance issues during the ongoing conflict with Cambodia. The VT-4, also used by Pakistan and other countries, has reportedly faced mechanical failures and design flaws that have hampered its effectiveness on the battlefield.

Thai tank crews criticized the tank’s reliability, particularly during extended combat operations. Issues reported include frequent malfunctions in the engine and electronic systems, reduced durability of the main gun barrel, and poor turret rotation speed, which limits the tank’s ability to respond quickly in combat. Soldiers also highlighted concerns about the vehicle’s protection and mobility, noting that the VT-4 is highly vulnerable in modern warfare scenarios.

Unofficially, Thai military officials have begun supplementing the VT-4 with Patton tanks and Ukraine-made T-84BM Oplot tanks for frontline operations. Several Chinese VT-4 tanks have already been destroyed by Cambodian forces, despite China’s claims that the tank is equipped with modern armor protection and strong firepower. The VT-4 is manufactured by China’s state-owned NORINCO company and is considered one of Thailand’s most advanced armored vehicles.

Implications for Pakistan

Pakistan, which also operates VT-4 tanks on a large scale, faces a potential wake-up call. Other operators of the tank include Nigeria. The Thailand experience raises questions about the reliability of Chinese weapons systems, following recent incidents such as radar failures in Venezuela, which contributed to the U.S. capture of President Nicolás Maduro, causing embarrassment for Beijing.

Experts warn that countries relying heavily on Chinese military hardware should carefully evaluate performance and operational readiness before committing to large-scale deployments in critical combat scenarios.
