China Issues Veiled Warning to U.S. from Bangladesh as Dhaka Becomes Dragon’s Strategic Hub

Dhaka: China has warned that any attempt to weaken its partnerships with Bangladesh or other South Asian countries will fail. The comments, made by Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen during meetings with Bangladesh’s new Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid, are widely seen as a warning to the United States.

China Steps Up in Bangladesh

With the new government under Tariq Rahman taking office, China has moved quickly to strengthen its influence in Bangladesh. Ambassador Yao emphasized Beijing’s readiness to expand cooperation across all sectors and described China’s support for the “Bangladesh First” policy. While he did not name any country, his statements are being interpreted as a direct message to the U.S., following concerns expressed by U.S. Ambassador Brent Christensen regarding China’s growing presence in South Asia.

U.S.-Bangladesh Relations

President Donald Trump has also stressed enhancing the U.S.-Bangladesh partnership in a letter to Tariq Rahman. Washington views Beijing’s expanding footprint in South Asia as a strategic challenge and continues to prioritize countering China’s influence in the region.

Sensitive Talks on Teesta River Project

During the meetings, Ambassador Yao discussed the Teesta River Project, a sensitive issue for India. He confirmed that Dhaka and Beijing have been in long-term discussions and that work on the project will commence soon. Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman called China a “trusted friend and partner” and reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to maintaining a friendly policy toward Beijing.

Strategic Implications

Analysts say China’s active engagement in Bangladesh signals a growing strategic presence in South Asia, potentially challenging U.S. initiatives under its South Asia policy. The rapid strengthening of Sino-Bangladeshi ties underscores Beijing’s intent to secure its influence in the region, while sending a clear message that foreign powers should not interfere in its bilateral partnerships.
