Beijing/Dhaka: China has expressed concern over the escalating violence in Bangladesh and stressed the importance of holding elections on schedule. The statement underscores China’s traditional diplomatic stance on promoting stability and parliamentary democracy in the country.
The announcement comes amid nationwide protests following the assassination of young leader Sharif Usman Hadi, raising fears that the upcoming general elections, scheduled for 12 February 2026, might be delayed.
A spokesperson from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said:
“China has clearly stated that we want safe, stable, and smooth parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. We believe that all regions in Bangladesh will advance key political agendas while maintaining national unity and stability.”
By emphasizing timely elections, China has sent a clear signal to the Mohammad Yunus administration, which has previously been accused of delaying electoral processes.
Strategic Ties with Dhaka
China has increasingly strengthened its economic and strategic ties with Dhaka in recent years, emerging as the country’s principal partner in both sectors. Since Yunus came to power, China has expanded not only economic cooperation but also military collaboration with Bangladesh.
Amid ongoing violence, several experts have expressed concern that the unrest could be exploited to postpone elections. Aamir Khasru Mahmood Chowdhury, former Commerce Minister under Khaleda Zia’s government, raised doubts over the Yunus administration’s handling of the situation, warning that protests could be used as a tool to delay the polls.
Political Response
Bangladesh’s key opposition party, BNP, voiced strong opposition to any postponement. BNP leaders reiterated their call for holding the elections on time, noting that both citizens and candidates are actively preparing for the February elections.
China’s firm stance reflects its growing influence in Bangladesh and its insistence on political stability, signaling to Yunus that delays or disruption of the electoral process will not be acceptable.
