Canada Rejects US “Board of Peace” Invite; Tensions Rise Between Trudeau and Trump

Relations between the United States and Canada, traditionally strong allies in trade, security, and strategic matters, have soured in recent months. The latest flare-up came at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump engaged in a heated exchange over US-led initiatives, including Greenland and the newly announced “Board of Peace.”

Carney Pushes Back on Trump

During his WEF speech, Carney sharply criticized Trump’s handling of Greenland and broader US-led global governance, suggesting that the world order under American leadership is faltering. He emphasized that countries like China and India must step up in global leadership. In response, Trump accused Canada of being ungrateful, stating that the country owes its prosperity and security largely to the United States.

Carney countered, saying, “Canada thrives because we are Canadians. Our progress cannot be credited solely to the United States. While we have maintained strong relations with Washington, our development is driven by the Canadian people.”

US Withdraws Invitation

Following the exchange, Trump withdrew Canada’s invitation to join his “Board of Peace,” a US-led initiative aimed at overseeing Gaza’s reconstruction and positioning itself as a global conflict-resolution body. Carney’s government had already indicated it would not provide funding to join the board, citing the condition of permanent membership as a requirement.

Board of Peace Faces International Skepticism

Trump launched the Board of Peace in Davos, presenting it as a global platform to mediate conflicts and rebuild war-torn regions such as Gaza. While some countries have agreed to participate, most nations remain cautious or are keeping their distance, highlighting skepticism about US leadership on global peace initiatives.

The Canada-US clash at Davos underscores growing friction between the two neighbors and raises questions about North American unity amid broader geopolitical tensions.
