Islamabad: Bangladesh is set to purchase JF-17 Thunder fighter jets from Pakistan, according to a major disclosure by Pakistan’s military publicity wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The announcement came following high-level talks between the Bangladesh Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan, and Pakistan Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, during Khan’s official visit to Islamabad.

Strategic Collaboration in Aerospace and Training
The meeting focused on strengthening operational cooperation and institutional coordination between the two air forces. Discussions included joint training programs, capacity building, and advancements in aerospace technology. Pakistan extended a ceremonial Guard of Honour to welcome the visiting Bangladeshi air chief, signaling the high-profile nature of the visit.

JF-17 Thunder: A Multi-Role Combat Aircraft
The JF-17 Thunder, co-developed by China and Pakistan, is a multi-role fighter jet already exported to several countries, though buyers have faced operational challenges. During the talks, the Bangladesh Air Force Chief expressed keen interest in leveraging Pakistan Air Force’s operational expertise and training infrastructure.

Comprehensive Training and Support Package
Air Chief Marshal Sidhu assured Bangladesh of full support through a comprehensive training framework, covering basic to advanced flying courses, specialized programs at PAF institutions, and the fast delivery of Super Mushshak trainer aircraft. A long-term support ecosystem, including maintenance and operational guidance, was promised.

Air Defence Integration
Bangladesh is also exploring Pakistan’s assistance in integrating air defence radar systems to enhance air surveillance and support the modernization of its aging fleet.

Potential Regional Implications
The procurement of JF-17 jets and closer military collaboration with Pakistan is expected to raise strategic concerns for India, given the evolving defence dynamics in the South Asian region.

The discussions mark a significant step in Bangladesh-Pakistan defence ties, potentially reshaping aerial capabilities in the Bay of Bengal region.
