Dhaka: Newly sworn-in Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman delivered his first national address on Wednesday night, outlining his government’s priorities and promising strong action to restore democracy, improve law and order, and curb corruption. In a significant message aimed at easing rising communal tensions, Rahman assured religious minorities—including Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians—that his government will not tolerate discrimination on the basis of religion.
Tariq Rahman, who took oath as Prime Minister on February 17 after securing a sweeping victory in the general elections, said Bangladesh belongs equally to all its citizens, regardless of faith.
“Whether someone is Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or Christian, religion does not define citizenship. This is our country, and we must move forward together,” Rahman said in his address.
His remarks are being seen as highly significant, especially in the wake of several recent incidents of violence and intimidation reported against the Hindu community in Bangladesh.
Focus on Economy, Law and Order, and Anti-Corruption Drive
Rahman acknowledged that his government has taken charge at a time when Bangladesh is facing serious challenges, including an unstable economy, widespread corruption, and deteriorating law and order.
He pledged that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government would prioritise restoring peace, security, and public confidence by strengthening policing and ensuring strict control over corruption.
“We have taken responsibility with a firm commitment to establish the rights of the people. The BNP government is fully dedicated to fulfilling this promise,” he stated.
Call for Ending Communal Atmosphere
In a direct appeal to the nation, the Prime Minister called for eliminating communal hatred and ensuring that no citizen faces discrimination based on religious identity.
He stressed that the government would serve every Bangladeshi equally, regardless of political opinion or voting preference.
“Whether you voted for BNP or not, the election is over. Every Bangladeshi has an equal right over this government. No one will be discriminated against based on political belief, religion, or ideology,” he declared.
Appeal to Traders Ahead of Ramadan
Extending greetings to the people ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, Rahman urged traders and business groups to keep prices reasonable and avoid exploiting citizens during the sacred period.
Promise of Institutional Discipline and Skilled Workforce Development
The Prime Minister also promised that all constitutional, governmental, and non-governmental institutions would operate strictly under established laws and regulations.
Rahman said his government aims to transform Bangladesh’s large population into a skilled workforce, turning the demographic strength into a valuable national resource that could elevate the country’s global standing.
“We want to convert our population into a skilled workforce. This will become our human resource strength and will give Bangladesh a distinct place in the world,” he said.
With this first address, Tariq Rahman has set a tone of national unity, reform, and governance-driven politics, as Bangladesh enters a new political chapter following a decisive election mandate.
