Bangladesh Hindu Man Lynched After False Blasphemy Allegation by Muslim Coworker: Taslima Nasreen Speaks Out

DHAKA: Shock and outrage have swept Bangladesh after a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, was brutally beaten to death by a mob on Thursday night. The victim’s body was reportedly tied to a tree and set on fire. New details surrounding the killing suggest a horrifying chain of events and raise questions about police complicity.

False Allegation Sparks Deadly Mob Attack
According to Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen, who resides in exile in India, Dipu was first targeted due to a personal grudge held by a Muslim coworker. The coworker falsely accused Dipu of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad. Despite Dipu informing the police about the accusation, no action was taken against the accuser.

Nasreen revealed on social media that Dipu worked at a factory in Bhaluka, Mymensingh. The false allegation quickly escalated, and extremist members of the community reportedly attacked him in public, describing the mob as “berserk followers of the Prophet” who tore into Dipu like wild animals.

Police Custody Fails to Protect the Victim
Dipu was reportedly placed in police custody for his protection. However, according to Nasreen, the mob either pressured the police or the authorities themselves handed Dipu over to extremists. Once outside, the attackers celebrated as they beat, hanged, and burned him alive.

Family Left Helpless
Dipu Chandra Das was the sole breadwinner of his family, supporting his disabled father, mother, wife, and child. Now, with his tragic death, his family faces an uncertain future, without the means to flee or seek safety. Nasreen highlighted that the family had no financial resources to escape India or protect themselves from further attacks, leaving them vulnerable and abandoned.

This incident has drawn international condemnation and underscores the precarious situation of religious minorities in certain regions of Bangladesh. The role of law enforcement in protecting citizens, especially vulnerable minorities, is now under intense scrutiny.
