Bangladesh: Extremists Threaten to Burn Channel Over Journalist Naznin Munni; Allegations of Mohammad Yunus’ Support

Dhaka: Extremist groups in Bangladesh have reportedly threatened the management of Global TV, demanding the dismissal of journalist Naznin Munni, warning that failure to comply would result in the channel being set on fire.

According to local reports, these extremists are targeting voices that expose their actions, seeking to silence media coverage. Earlier this month, offices of two media houses, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, were set ablaze following the assassination of extremist leader Sharif Usman Hadi, trapping dozens of journalists inside. Now, Global TV faces similar threats, with Munni specifically in the crosshairs.

Targeted for Speaking the Truth

Naznin Munni, a well-known journalist and anchor with Global TV, had supported the student movements in July–August of last year, hosting multiple shows and posting extensively on social media. Her coverage, seen as independent and truthful, has allegedly angered extremists reportedly acting with the backing of Mohammad Yunus.

The threats were delivered on December 21 by members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who demanded Munni’s removal from the channel. The organization later distanced itself from the individuals involved, with its president, Rifat Rashid, promising action against the perpetrators.

Details of the Threat

Munni revealed in a Facebook post that 7–8 individuals visited Global TV’s office in Tejgaon, threatening to set the channel ablaze if she was not removed. The group claimed that Munni, allegedly an Awami League supporter, had not provided adequate coverage of Sharif Usman Hadi’s death.

The individuals met with the channel’s Managing Director, demanding Munni’s dismissal. The MD clarified that Munni had no affiliations with the Awami League and rejected their demands. Munni stated that she would not be intimidated by such threats, emphasizing the ongoing pattern of harassment against journalists and independent media in Bangladesh.
