Bangladesh Elections: Jamaat Shifts Stance Ahead of Voting, Pledges Improved Ties with India and Minority Protection

Dhaka: Just hours ahead of Bangladesh’s general elections, Jamaat-e-Islami has signaled a significant shift in its approach toward India. The party’s leader, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, stated that Bangladesh is committed to maintaining strong, mutually beneficial relations with its neighbor. He also assured the protection of minority Hindu communities in the country.

Speaking to reporters in Dhaka on the eve of the polls, Dr. Rahman emphasized national unity, equal citizenship, and constructive engagement with neighboring countries, including India.

Commitment to Strong India-Bangladesh Ties

Dr. Rahman said, “We seek to establish positive and enhanced relations with our neighbors and friends around the world. India is our closest neighbor and will remain a top priority. Our aim is not to create conflict but to foster partnership for development and peace. Mutual respect and trust are essential for this.”

Minority Protection and Inclusive Citizenship

Addressing concerns about minority communities, Rahman rejected any form of discrimination, stating, “Regardless of religion, all are Bangladeshi citizens. There are no second-class citizens in our country. We do not recognize anyone as a minority; everyone is first-class. We do not support division based on majority or minority status.”

Focus on Inclusive Development

Highlighting the importance of inclusive growth, Rahman added, “Progress depends on genuine inclusion. Inclusion does not mean creating divisions among people; it means recognizing that first and foremost, we are all Bangladeshis.”

This election marks the first general vote since the violent political unrest in 2024, which led to the resignation of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Jamaat-e-Islami, leading an alliance of 11 political parties, faces its main challenge from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led coalition.
