Amid ongoing protests and unrest in Bangladesh, the Indian and Bangladeshi military chiefs have maintained direct communication to ensure the safety of Indian interests in the country. According to CNN News18, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman has assured his Indian counterpart that all Indian properties, including diplomatic missions, remain secure despite the escalating tensions in Dhaka. The Bangladeshi army has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order in the capital.
The unrest escalated following the death of pro-India opposition leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who was fatally shot by masked assailants in Dhaka and later died in a Singapore hospital. Hadi’s death triggered widespread violent demonstrations across the country, during which several extremist groups targeted media offices and cultural organizations. The offices of major newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star were set on fire, and the premises of the leftist cultural group Udichi Shilpigoshthi were vandalized. Indian diplomatic missions also faced attempted attacks during the turmoil.
The violence comes amid rising concerns over attacks on minority communities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh. Just a day earlier, a Hindu youth was brutally lynched in Mymensingh, sparking international outrage. New Delhi had summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Mohammad Riaz Hamidullah to formally register objections regarding threats to Indian missions and anti-India rhetoric. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that while India remains committed to peace and stability in Bangladesh, it will not tolerate any compromise on the security of its diplomatic missions.
The ongoing dialogue between the military leadership of both nations is seen as a reassuring step to manage tensions and safeguard bilateral relations amid the unrest.
