Canberra: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese tied the knot with Jodie Hayden in a private ceremony at The Lodge, his official residence in Canberra. At 62, Albanese became the first Australian Prime Minister to marry while in office. This is his second marriage, following his divorce from former NSW politician Carmel Tebbutt in 2019. Albanese has a son, Nathan, from his first marriage.
Albanese had proposed to Hayden on Valentine’s Day last year, and their wedding had been widely anticipated ever since. Several key members of his cabinet attended the ceremony, including Jim Chalmers, Penny Wong, Katy Gallagher, Richard Marles, and actor Rice Muldoon. Hayden’s 5-year-old niece Ella and her brother Patrick also served as witnesses. The couple has received congratulations from across Australia following their marriage.
Wedding Delayed Due to Elections
The wedding was postponed last year due to the federal elections. Albanese won re-election as Prime Minister in May 2025. Speaking in June, he had joked that if he had not returned to office, the couple would have gone on a two-month honeymoon. Now, they plan to embark on a two-week honeymoon.
About Jodie Hayden
Born in Bankstown and raised on the NSW Central Coast, 46-year-old Hayden has spent two decades working in the superannuation sector, holding key roles in major financial institutions and industry funds. She is 16 years younger than Albanese and comes from a family of school teachers, establishing her own notable career in finance.
Albanese and Hayden first met in March 2020 at a dinner event in Melbourne. Their friendship blossomed over time, and in an interview with Australian Women’s Weekly, Albanese recalled how casual drinks at Newtown’s Young Henrys eventually led to their decision to share their lives together.
Albanese’s Political Journey
Anthony Albanese has been a member of parliament for over 30 years and has served as Australia’s Prime Minister since 2022. Rising from a modest background, he has become one of the country’s prominent political leaders, now making headlines for his historic marriage while holding office.
