Another Political Leader Shot in Bangladesh After Hadi’s Death; NCP Chief Critically Injured

Dhaka: Bangladesh is witnessing escalating political violence in major cities following the death of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi. Hundreds have taken to the streets in protest, and unrest continues to spread across the country.

In the latest incident, Motaleeb Sikder, the Khulna Divisional Chief and central organizer of the National Citizen Party (NCP), was shot in the head and is currently hospitalized in critical condition. The attack mirrors the pattern seen in Hadi’s killing, with unidentified gunmen targeting Sikder and fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting.

Sharif Usman bin Hadi was murdered last week by unknown assailants, triggering widespread violence in Dhaka and other major cities. The subsequent attack on Sikder raises concerns about further escalation of unrest in Bangladesh.

Background of the Violence
The NCP, founded last year by student leaders who protested against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has become entangled in the ongoing political turmoil. Following Hadi’s death, mobs engaged in arson and vandalism in multiple cities. Minority Hindu communities and political activists have increasingly become targets of mob violence.

Bangladesh has been grappling with political instability for months. In June–July last year, nationwide protests against Sheikh Hasina’s government led to its collapse in August, forcing her to leave Dhaka temporarily. During these demonstrations, large-scale violence was reported in Dhaka and surrounding cities.

Law and Order Concerns
The interim government, led by Mohammad Yunus, has struggled to restore law and order. Despite official claims of control, the police and administrative machinery have appeared helpless in the face of mob violence. Recent events, including targeted killings and arson, have drawn international attention to Bangladesh’s ongoing governance crisis.

With the attack on Motaleeb Sikder, the country faces the grim prospect of continuing unrest, as political tensions and lawlessness show no signs of abating.
