DHAKA: In the aftermath of the brutal mob lynching of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das, another Hindu individual has been attacked in Bangladesh. This time, the victim was a Hindu rickshaw driver targeted in the Khulna Division. Authorities reported that the incident occurred on Friday.
Rickshaw Driver Targeted Over Red Thread
The victim, Gobind Biswas, was assaulted when the mob noticed a red thread on his wrist, traditionally worn by Hindus. Witnesses reported that Biswas repeatedly pleaded with the crowd, explaining that he was merely a rickshaw driver. He was beaten near the gate of the Jhenaidah Municipality before being taken into police custody. Police confirmed that Biswas sustained injuries to his chest and neck.
False Allegations Spread Among Crowd
Eyewitnesses stated that rumors were circulated at the scene alleging that Biswas was a spy for India and connected to the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Fueled by these baseless claims, the mob attacked him despite his repeated pleas.
Videos Show Police Custody
A video circulating on social media shows Biswas being taken by police while requesting release and explaining his occupation as a rickshaw driver. Another video from inside the police station reportedly references transactions on his phone allegedly linked to India’s Reserve Bank, as well as a call from an Indian contact. Biswas clarified to authorities that the caller was a personal acquaintance.
Police Investigation Underway
Jhenaidah Police confirmed Biswas’s detention and stated that he had spent several years in India. Officials are investigating allegations of potential connections with Indian agencies.
This attack follows the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das on Thursday evening in Bhāluka, Mymensingh, where a factory worker was beaten to death over alleged derogatory remarks against the Prophet Muhammad. Authorities later clarified that no evidence has been found supporting these allegations.
