Amid widespread protests in Iran over the past two weeks, reports have emerged suggesting that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may have devised a contingency plan to leave the country in case of government collapse. Comparisons are being drawn to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia at the end of 2024 following armed uprisings in Damascus.
Unrest in Iran
Iran has witnessed major protests across multiple cities, raising concerns about political instability. Demonstrations have reportedly put pressure on Tehran’s ruling apparatus, with speculation that foreign powers could influence the unrest. The United States has publicly hinted at possible involvement, further intensifying tensions.
Khamenei’s Alleged Contingency Plan
According to Israeli media citing The Times (UK), Khamenei, 86, has allegedly prepared a plan to flee to Russia if nationwide protests escalate beyond control. The plan reportedly includes:
- Khamenei himself and his family
- Around 20 close aides and associates, including his son Mojtaba Khamenei, considered his successor
- Billions of dollars in assets intended to be taken along
Israeli intelligence official Benny Sabti claims that Russia is the preferred destination because of Khamenei’s favorable view of Vladimir Putin and cultural similarities that could ease his transition.
Parallels with Bashar al-Assad
The plan reportedly mirrors the exit strategy of Bashar al-Assad, who fled Syria to Moscow in November 2024 after armed groups surrounded the capital. Assad has since been living comfortably in Russia and resumed his eye-care practice. Analysts note that while Khamenei’s plan is similar in concept, the unfolding situation in Iran remains unpredictable.
Uncertain Future
While reports of Khamenei’s preparation highlight the regime’s vulnerability amid protests, the real outcome in Iran remains unclear. Political analysts are closely monitoring developments, especially as demonstrations continue to grow.
This revelation underscores the tense situation in Iran and the lengths to which its leadership may go to secure personal safety in the face of escalating unrest.
