Islamabad: In a provocative statement following a deadly suicide bombing in Islamabad, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif declared that the Pakistan Army is fully prepared to fight a two-front war—against India on the eastern border and the Afghan Taliban on the western front. Asif’s remarks, seen as a fresh round of sabre-rattling, come amid rising tensions and a string of terror attacks across Pakistan.
Speaking at a public event, Asif said, “We are ready for war on both fronts. Allah has helped us in the past, and He will help us again. We will emerge victorious on both sides.”
His statement followed Tuesday’s suicide blast in Islamabad, which killed 12 people and left 36 injured. A day earlier, another explosion was reported in Waziristan. The Pakistani government has accused Afghanistan of harboring the attackers and hinted at Indian involvement, further straining regional ties.
Repeated Provocations and Allegations
Khawaja Asif, known for his inflammatory rhetoric, has repeatedly accused Afghanistan-based militants of orchestrating terror attacks in Pakistan with India’s alleged support. His recent comments are being viewed as part of an ongoing attempt to deflect attention from Pakistan’s internal instability and growing extremist violence.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Joins the Chorus
Adding fuel to the controversy, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed Pakistan’s National Assembly on Wednesday, claiming that India and Afghanistan are behind the recent wave of attacks. Sharif went on to threaten retaliation against the Afghan Taliban, stating that the “time for patience is over.”
He told lawmakers, “It is no longer a secret that foreign forces are operating against Pakistan. The recent attacks in South Waziristan’s Wana and in Islamabad clearly show that the masterminds are sitting across the border and working together.”
With Islamabad blaming both its neighbors, analysts warn that such aggressive posturing could heighten regional instability at a time when Pakistan is already facing economic turmoil, political unrest, and rising terror threats within its borders.
