After Supreme Court Ruling, Trump Confirms Tariffs on India Will Continue

Washington: Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling declaring Donald Trump’s global tariffs illegal, questions have arisen about the fate of tariffs imposed on India. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump clarified that the Supreme Court decision will not affect the ongoing trade arrangement between the U.S. and India.

Trump stated, “This will not change anything. They [India] will impose tariffs, and we will not.” He emphasized that the previous arrangement with India remains intact, even as he announced a new 10% global tariff under a separate legal provision.

Trump Criticizes Supreme Court

Trump expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Court’s ruling, calling it disappointing and accusing some justices of lacking the courage to act in America’s national interest. He described the decision as a personal and professional insult and reiterated that he has alternative legal avenues to enforce tariffs globally.

Supreme Court Ruling Details

The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling, invalidated Trump’s tariffs on countries worldwide, stating that the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not grant the President authority to impose tariffs. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “Our task today is only to determine whether the power to regulate importation under IEEPA includes the authority to impose tariffs. It does not.”

India-U.S. Trade Deal Unaffected

The ruling comes at a crucial time as India and the U.S. were moving toward finalizing a trade deal. Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that an interim trade agreement is expected to be signed in March and implemented in April. Trump’s comments indicate that the U.S.-India trade arrangement will continue as negotiated, even amid the broader legal challenges to his global tariffs.
