
Dhaka: Following the results of Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally called BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman to congratulate him on his party’s historic victory. Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also spoken to Rahman over the phone to extend his felicitations.
Sharif shared the news on social media platform X, describing the call as warm and friendly. He addressed Rahman as “my brother” and highlighted that this was the first conversation between the two leaders since the elections. Rahman’s BNP secured a landslide victory, winning 211 out of 299 seats, virtually paving the way for him to become Bangladesh’s next Prime Minister.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
In his post, Shehbaz Sharif wrote:
“This evening, I had a warm and friendly phone conversation with BNP Chairman, my brother Mr. Tarique Rahman, to congratulate him on his party’s historic and remarkable victory in the general elections.”
Sharif further emphasized Pakistan’s desire to strengthen fraternal ties with Bangladesh, continue the legacy of Begum Khaleda Zia, and advance shared goals of peace, development, and prosperity. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his congratulations to Rahman following the BNP’s triumph.
BNP’s Historic Win
The parliamentary elections held on February 12 saw the BNP secure a commanding majority, winning 211 of 299 seats. With this decisive mandate, Tarique Rahman is all but certain to become Bangladesh’s next Prime Minister. Following the victory, Rahman pledged to form an inclusive government committed to protecting all citizens, regardless of their religion or community.
