A new WhatsApp scam is raising serious concerns across India, with fraudsters sending messages claiming that a child’s APAAR ID has been successfully generated. The messages urge parents to complete e-KYC using Aadhaar details, a move that experts warn could lead to financial fraud and identity theft.
What Is the Message Claiming?
According to reports, several users have received WhatsApp messages stating:
“Your APAAR ID: 888290852952 has been successfully generated and is now available in the Issued Documents section of DigiLocker.”
The message also references the government initiative “One Nation, One Student ID” and asks recipients to complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC to avail further benefits.
The alarming part is that many recipients never applied for an APAAR ID, yet still received these messages—strongly indicating a scam.
Why This Is a Serious Threat
Messages asking for Aadhaar details, e-KYC verification, or directing users to click on links are major red flags. Aadhaar information is directly linked to bank accounts and government services, and sharing it with unknown sources can result in financial loss or misuse of identity.
Experts say the scam messages are written in a formal, government-like tone, making them appear authentic and increasing the chances of people falling into the trap.
Didn’t Apply, Still Got the Message?
Several parents have reported receiving APAAR ID confirmation messages despite never registering or applying for their child’s APAAR ID. This confusion is exactly what scammers exploit, pressuring people into hurried decisions that may lead to cyber fraud.
How to Stay Safe from This Scam
- Do not trust WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers claiming to be government services.
- Be immediately alert if a message mentions Aadhaar details or e-KYC.
- Never click on links sent via private WhatsApp messages.
- Verify any government-related message through official apps or websites only.
What Is APAAR ID?
APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. It is a digital student ID designed to store and manage students’ academic records securely. All documents linked to APAAR are officially stored in DigiLocker, ensuring safe digital access.
How to Verify If the Message Is Genuine
If you have applied for an APAAR ID and receive a message from a private WhatsApp number, do not respond. Instead:
- Open the official DigiLocker app and check the Issued Documents section.
- Contact your child’s school, as they maintain official records related to APAAR ID generation.
