“Your APAAR ID Has Been Generated”: New WhatsApp Scam Raises Alarm Bells

A new WhatsApp scam has surfaced, triggering serious concerns among parents across the country. Fraudsters are sending messages claiming that a child’s APAAR ID has been successfully generated and is now available on DigiLocker. The message further urges recipients to complete e-KYC using Aadhaar details, a move that could expose them to major financial fraud.

What Is the Message About?

According to a report, many users have received WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers stating:
“Your APAAR ID: 888290852952 has been successfully generated and is now available in the Issued Documents section of your DigiLocker account.”

The message also mentions the government initiative “One Nation, One Student ID” and asks recipients to complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC to access additional benefits. The language and format of the message closely resemble official communication, making it appear authentic and trustworthy.

Why Is This Message Dangerous?

Cyber experts warn that any WhatsApp message from an unknown number asking for Aadhaar details or e-KYC verification should be treated as a red flag. Aadhaar information is directly linked to bank accounts and other financial services, and clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal details can result in serious monetary losses.

Reports suggest that the scam messages are crafted in a highly convincing manner, increasing the risk of people falling prey to cyber fraud.

Received the Message Without Applying for APAAR ID

Several parents have reported receiving such messages despite never applying for their child’s APAAR ID. This has caused confusion and panic, pushing some people to consider following the instructions in the message—exactly what scammers intend.

Experts warn that this confusion is being exploited to trick users into sharing sensitive information.

How to Stay Safe from This Scam

  • Do not trust WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers claiming to be related to government services.
  • Be extremely cautious if a message mentions Aadhaar details or e-KYC.
  • Avoid clicking on links sent via private WhatsApp messages.
  • If the language appears official and includes a link, verify it independently before taking any action.

What Is APAAR ID?

APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. It is a digital ID created for students to store and manage their academic records digitally. These records are securely stored in DigiLocker to ensure easy access and long-term safety of educational documents.

How to Verify If the Message Is Real or Fake

If you have applied for an APAAR ID but receive confirmation via a private WhatsApp number, ignore the message. Instead:

  • Open the official DigiLocker app and check the Issued Documents section.
  • Contact your child’s school directly—if an APAAR ID has been generated, the school will have a record of it.

Bottom Line:
Government agencies do not ask for Aadhaar details or e-KYC through private WhatsApp messages. Staying alert and verifying information through official channels is the best way to protect yourself from such cyber scams.
