China has achieved a remarkable milestone in drone technology. A hydrogen-powered drone, named Tianmushan-1, has set a Guinness World Record by flying continuously for more than four hours, covering a distance of over 188 kilometers. Unlike conventional drones powered by batteries, this drone runs on hydrogen fuel, marking a significant advancement in the field of sustainable aviation technology.
About the Hydrogen Drone
The Tianmushan-1 was developed by Tianmushan Laboratory at Beihang University. Its first flight took place in August 2024, and production began in April 2025. The drone weighs just 19 kilograms empty and can carry up to 6 kilograms of cargo. Its hydrogen fuel cell allows it to generate energy during flight, unlike battery-powered drones that have limited flight time. The drone operates efficiently in extreme weather, from -40°C to +50°C.
How the Record Was Achieved
The record-setting flight took place in Hangzhou, China. The drone stayed airborne for over four hours without stopping, covering 188.605 kilometers under real-time monitoring. All data were verified in accordance with Guinness World Records regulations. The drone maintained engine stability and excellent handling throughout the flight, making it the longest flight by a hydrogen-powered multirotor drone to date.
Practical Uses of the Drone
Beyond record-breaking achievements, this drone has immense practical potential. Being environmentally friendly, it produces no harmful emissions. It can be deployed for:
- Inspecting pipelines and infrastructure
- Traffic monitoring in urban areas
- Forest and wildlife surveillance
- Delivering goods to remote locations
- Emergency response and disaster relief
Its long flight endurance allows it to cover large areas efficiently, proving that hydrogen drones are ready for real-world applications.
The Future of Hydrogen Drones
Hydrogen-powered drones like Tianmushan-1 are set to revolutionize the drone industry. They promise longer flight times and greater utility, from monitoring traffic in cities to delivering goods and aiding disaster management. China’s record-setting achievement offers a glimpse into a future where hydrogen drones play a critical role in daily life and industrial operations.
