“Why Starlink Services Were Suspended in Papua New Guinea Amid Global Rollout”

Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, is expanding its services worldwide. However, in the small Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea, the company has been forced to suspend operations due to licensing and reliability concerns. Reports reveal that Starlink’s parent company, SpaceX, had not received formal approval from the Papua New Guinea government, yet the services were being offered to residents.

Operations Began Without a License
According to RNZ, Starlink began providing internet services in Papua New Guinea without official government permission. Terminals were being sold, installed, and subscriptions were being accepted despite the lack of clearance. The National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) issued an order last week directing SpaceX to cease operations immediately.

Legal Dispute Ongoing
The matter has reached the courts, as the Ombudsman Commission (OC) has been questioning the reliability of Starlink services since 2024. Until a judicial decision is made in Starlink’s favor, services in the country will remain suspended.

Public Demand for Starlink
Despite the suspension, local residents are eager to access Starlink’s satellite internet. A petition signed by 200 citizens urges the government to allow the service. Starlink maintains that its services can benefit households, businesses, schools, and remote areas lacking reliable internet connectivity.

Satellite Internet Helps Small Nations
Beyond Papua New Guinea, satellite internet has proven vital for connectivity in smaller nations. About two and a half years ago, when an underwater internet cable was damaged due to a volcanic eruption in Tonga, Starlink quickly restored internet services, helping the affected communities regain connectivity.

Status in India
In India, Starlink’s services are eagerly awaited. The government has approved the necessary licenses, and Starlink had briefly listed recharge plans and kit prices on its website due to a technical glitch. The company is expected to officially launch services in India next year.
