As the new year begins, many are asking: where is BSNL’s 5G? While private telecom operators like Jio and Airtel are pushing users toward 5G with higher 4G tariffs, BSNL’s strategy is different. The state-owned telco is focusing on expanding affordable 4G connectivity across India, aiming to strengthen its base before rolling out 5G. Here’s a detailed look at BSNL’s plan and the surprise it holds for its competitors.
The 5G Delay: A Strategic Move
Despite 2026 being underway, BSNL’s 5G rollout remains pending. At first glance, it may seem the company is lagging years behind Jio and Airtel. However, industry experts say the delay is part of BSNL’s long-term strategy. The telco has already launched 4G in over 97,000 locations nationwide, with plans to expand further. While private operators hike 4G tariffs to push customers to 5G, BSNL is focusing on providing affordable 4G plans, targeting regions where 5G isn’t yet essential.
For most working professionals and students in India, high-speed fiber internet already meets their needs, reducing the immediate demand for 5G.
BSNL’s Surprise Plan for Jio & Airtel
BSNL’s real “surprise” lies in strengthening its 4G network. There are still many areas in India where 4G coverage is limited. By offering affordable 4G tariffs, BSNL is slowly adding new users and expanding its footprint. Experts note that such a strategy could make a significant difference in the telecom market, especially as private competitors continue to raise their prices.
Why 5G Isn’t Here Yet
Earlier reports indicate that BSNL is preparing to launch standalone 5G (SA 5G) under an operational expenditure model. Leveraging its indigenous 4G technology, BSNL can upgrade to 5G with just a software update. The network equipment, supplied by Tejas Networks, is already 5G-ready.
Initially, BSNL could provide NSA 5G (Non-Standalone) similar to other private operators and gradually transition to full SA 5G. This phased approach allows the company to strengthen its 4G infrastructure while preparing for a future 5G rollout.
The Strategy in Action
BSNL’s 5G delay appears intentional and strategic. By the time widespread demand for 5G arises, the company hopes to have a robust 4G network in place. Affordable and stable 4G connectivity for the masses could reshape India’s telecom sector, providing strong competition to private players like Jio, Airtel, and Vi.
For now, BSNL seems to be betting on practical connectivity over hype, ensuring millions of users get reliable and cost-effective mobile internet before making the leap to 5G.
