WhatsApp Usage to Change in 15 Days: New SIM Binding Rules to Apply from February; Will the Government Modify 6-Hour Logout Norm?

Starting February 2026, the way you use WhatsApp could change significantly. In November 2025, the Indian government directed all messaging apps, including WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal, to implement SIM binding. This new regulation will come into effect in February, 90 days after the directive was issued.

What is SIM Binding?
SIM binding means that a messaging app will only work if the SIM card used to register the account is inserted in the device. If you remove the SIM card from your phone, the app will stop functioning. Users will no longer be able to run the same account on multiple devices without repeated verification.

Desktop App Changes
Messaging apps that support desktop versions will now be required to auto log out every six hours. This means users linking WhatsApp to a computer will need to re-establish the connection every six hours, which could be inconvenient for professionals relying on desktop access for work.

Why This Rule Was Introduced
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) stated that SIM binding is intended to curb fraud. Criminals often use Indian SIMs abroad or make calls via internet platforms to deceive people. Previously, platforms like WhatsApp verified a mobile number only once, making it easier for fraudsters to use the account across multiple devices. SIM binding aims to make it harder for such misuse.

Impact on Users
While SIM binding could help prevent online fraud and protect privacy, it may create inconveniences. Users will no longer be able to run multiple WhatsApp accounts on a single phone without the respective SIMs. People who use their WhatsApp accounts on different devices without the original SIM will face difficulties. The six-hour desktop logout rule may also inconvenience professionals and frequent users.

It remains to be seen whether the government grants extensions or modifies the rule before implementation.
